"The Federal Government and the Opposition must cooperate on policy regarding asylum-seekers" says Bishop Philip Huggins.

"National leadership is required, transcending party politics.

"These latest drowning deaths of desperate people must focus us on finding better regional arrangements.

"Why not blend both major parties’ policies? Perhaps trial both the Malaysian and Nauru options in some agreed manner.

"A subsequent review could then determine if one is more effective.

"Meanwhile, our leaders should work in a bipartisan manner with the Indonesian Government and the United Nations High Commission on Refugees on other improved regional arrangements.

"Action is needed this last sitting week of the Federal Parliament. Our Parliamentary leaders must respond to this latest tragedy with practical initiatives."
