Most Archdeacons assist their Regional Bishop with the general oversight of a group of parishes in that particular Region. This includes property, finance, legal and staffing issues.
Sometimes Archdeacons will be appointed to a particular ministry area, such as the Archdeacon for Multi-cultural Ministry, ecumenical matters or theological education.
Archdeacons are part of the Diocesan Senior Staff team chaired by the Archbishop, the Regional Senior Staff teams, the Regional Councils and the Diocesan Building Committee.
The Archdeaconry of Box Hill is in the Eastern Region of Melbourne. It consists of 20 parishes organized into two Deaneries. The Venerable Peter MacPherson became the Archdeacon of Box Hill in November 2009.
The Dandenong Archdeaconry spreads from bayside Mentone out to Pakenham and Upper Beaconsfield, Cranbourne to Oakleigh, and includes long settled suburbs as well as some of the fastest growth corridors of outer Melbourne.
The Essendon Archdeaconry stretches from the city fringe suburb of Ascot Vale in the south to the rural community of Lancefield in the North. The Venerable Judi Pollard was appointed Archdeacon of Essendon in July 2013.
The Archdeaconry of Frankston is in the Southern Region of Melbourne covers bayside churches from Mordialloc to Sorrento on the Mornington Peninsula. The Venerable Alan Hughes became the Archdeacon of Frankston in June 2009.
The Archdeaconry of Geelong is in the Western Region and includes the Area Deaneries of Bellarine and Corio. The Archdeacon of Geelong is the Venerable Neil Hicks.
The Archdeaconry of Kew is in the Eastern Region of Melbourne. It covers a variety of suburban churches. The Venerable Greg Allinson became the Archdeacon of Kew in November 2012.
The Archdeaconry of La Trobe stretches from Brunswick north to Craigieburn, Walan and Wandong and from Northcote to Epping. The Venerable Robert Newton has been the Archdeacon of La Trobe in the Northern Region since 2011.
The Archdeaconry of Maroondah is in the Eastern region comprises the Deaneries of the Hills and Croydon, spanning the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges. The Venerable Gail Pinchbeck is Archdeacon of Maroondah.
Congregational life is varied in the inner city, from St Paul’s Cathedral in Flinders Street, to the contemporary City on A Hill congregation. The Archdeacon of Melbourne is the Venerable Richard Condie, who is also the vicar of St Jude's Carlton.
Port Phillip and Bayside
The Archdeaconry stretches along Port Phillip Bay from Port Melbourne to Cheltenham. The Venerable Ray McInnes, an Anglicare Board member and serves on various Diocesan committees, has been the Vicar of Albert Park since 2005.
Stonnington and Glen Eira
The archdeaconry extends throughout the inner south eastern suburbs, reaching from Caulfield racecourse down to the banks of the Yarra River. The archdeacon of Stonington and Glen Eira is the Venerable Dr Bradly Billings, the vicar of St John’s Toorak.
The Archdeaconry of The Yarra is in the Eastern Region of Melbourne. It covers a wide variety of suburban churches and urban fringe churches. The Venerable Tony White was appointed Archdeacon of The Yarra in October 2013.
The Archdeaconry of Williamstown is located in the West of Melbourne and includes the suburbs from Williamstown to St Albans, the area along the Western Freeway up to Bacchus Marsh and along the Geelong road from the Westgate Bridge through to Werribee.
