Most Archdeacons assist their Regional Bishop with the general oversight of a group of parishes in that particular Region. This includes property, finance, legal and staffing issues.

Sometimes Archdeacons will be appointed to a particular ministry area, such as the Archdeacon for Multi-cultural Ministry, ecumenical matters or theological education.

Archdeacons are part of the Diocesan Senior Staff team chaired by the Archbishop, the Regional Senior Staff teams, the Regional Councils and the Diocesan Building Committee.
