​Bishop Genieve Blackwell

Bishop Genieve Blackwell became a deacon in 1993 in the Diocese of Sydney (serving as Assistant Minister in the parish of St Andrew’s Riverwood). She was ordained as a priest in the Bathurst diocese in 1998 (serving in Gulgong and Grenfell) and consecrated Bishop in the Diocese of Canberra and Goulburn in 2012. She has degrees from the University of Sydney and the Australian College of Theology, and an MA in theology from the Australian Catholic University.

In the Diocese of Canberra and Goulburn, Bishop Genieve served first in the parish of Yass including as Archdeacon for Goulburn and Rural Ministry from 2007 to 2011. With her consecration in 2012, she served both as Regional Bishop and as Rector of St Paul’s Turvey Park in Wagga Wagga before taking up the appointment of assistant bishop in the diocese of Melbourne in June 2015.

Bishop Genieve serves as Bishop of the Marmingatha Episcopate which is largely the parishes which are within the urban redevelopment zone. Other responsibilities include Anglicare Victoria Board and Preventing Violence Against Women Steering Group. Marmingatha (divine, supreme being) Jumbunna (Proclamation) and Oodthenong (gathering) are names given in consultation with the elders of the Wurundjeri tribe to the three episcopates.  Together they convey the Diocesan vision to make the Word of God fully known.
 
Bishop Genieve is married to John, a criminal justice chaplain, and has two children at university and high school.
