The Anglican Diocese of Melbourne covers the greater Melbourne metropolitan area and Geelong. The Diocese is divided into three areas of episcopal care: Marmingatha, Oodthenong and Jumbunna.

The naming of these areas of episcopal care reflects the diocese’s commitment to the process of reconciliation between the first Australians and those that have arrived in this country since 1788. In consultation with Indigenous elder Aunty Di, we have been given permission to name each area of care using the local Woi Wurrung language:

  • Marmingatha Episcopate, with the meaning of divine, supreme being
  • Oodthenong Episcopate, with the meaning of gathering
  • Jumbunna Episcopate, with the meaning of speaking out, proclamation

Together these convey making the Word of God known.

Each area has its own Assistant Bishop to provide pastoral and administrative oversight.
