Abp Philip Freier

Archbishop Philip Freier

From the archbishop...

Welcome to Network 1:28, the theological training department for the Anglican Diocese of Melbourne.

A message from Dr Philip Freier

God’s call to ordained ministry is serious business. The Anglican Diocese of Melbourne welcomes all people who believe God is calling them to full time ministry.

As you will see from this journal, there are many steps to fulfilling that calling, the first of which is to listen to the discerning wisdom of others.

One of the greatest joys as Archbishop is the ordination service. To ordain men and women who have spent many years searching their hearts, learning about the word of God, listening, praying and seeking, preparing for a lifetime of service to others is an extraordinary privilege.

It is heartening that men and women, young and old, of different ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds, are hearing God’ call to ordained ministry. Our church is strong and secure in Christ.

Those who are called are ready to present themselves to a rigorous process - a process that can take up to eleven years - but even then is not yet done. When you embark on the journey of ordained ministry, the learning is lifelong.

I commend to you these website resources which capture the journey of theological training within the diocese, the journey we are now calling Network 1:28. Be encouraged, be prayerful and remember the words of Colossians 1:28: "It is he whom we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone in all wisdom, so that we may present everyone mature in Christ.

Grace and peace in Christ Jesus
The Most Reverend Dr Philip Freier Archbishop of Melbourne
