Throughout 2026, people across the Diocese have been listening, praying and discerning together about the future direction of our shared life and mission.
During Listening in Lent, almost 3,000 people contributed around a quarter of a million words. Clergy and lay people, parishes, chaplaincies, schools, agencies, ministry teams and individuals spoke honestly about where they could see God at work, the hopes they hold and the challenges they are facing.

Christian discernment is the prayerful work of listening for God’s leading.
It means paying attention to Scripture, prayer, the wisdom and experience of others, the circumstances in which God has placed us and the work of the Holy Spirit.
Discernment takes time. It involves listening carefully, testing what is being heard and remaining open to challenge and change.
This Season of Discernment has helped the Diocese consider what was heard through Listening in Lent and ask:
A season of prayer, listening, reflection and conversation across the Diocese.
Almost 3,000 people took part, contributing around a quarter of a million words through questionnaires, written responses, parish conversations and diocesan gatherings.
The process invited people to speak honestly about the Diocese’s life, strengths, challenges and hopes.
What was heard through Listening in Lent was prayerfully considered alongside Scripture, theology, diocesan data, previous work and local wisdom.
Themes were brought together, tested and developed as the Diocese began to discern a possible shared direction.
Clergy and authorised lay ministers gathered at St Paul’s Cathedral to worship, pray and explore what God may be calling the Diocese to in this season.
They tested the emerging direction, shared their experience and offered feedback to help strengthen the work.
Feedback from the conference and other conversations informed further work on the vision, strategic direction and proposed first phase.
Archbishop in Council approved For the harvest: Vision and Working Strategy 2027–2036 and commended it to the Diocese.
It will be presented to Melbourne Synod in October 2026. The motion asks Synod to welcome the strategy and endorse its vision, strategic priorities and broad first-phase direction. It also contains invitations for every member, parish, ministry and diocesan body.
Archbishop in Council has approved For the harvest, a proposed vision and strategy for the Diocese. It will be brought to Melbourne Synod, which is being invited to welcome it.
The full strategy has been provided to Synod members through the Synod papers and remains the authoritative account of the direction being brought to Synod.
Prayer belongs throughout this process.
Please continue to pray for those presenting the strategy, for Synod members as they prepare to gather, and for the whole Diocese as we seek God’s leading together.
This journey will continue towards Synod and beyond as the Diocese seeks to listen well, discern faithfully and respond courageously to God’s call.
